Exploring the Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Posted on 3/30/2016 by Mark Bieber
An elderly woman about to receive a root canal from her dentist. If your dentist recommends that you undergo a root canal to save your tooth, you may be nervous about the procedure.

This is perfectly normal, as root canal therapy tends to get a bad reputation when it comes to dental procedures.

Fortunately, there are a variety of great benefits to going through this treatment, and hopefully by learning about some of them, you can feel more comfortable.

You'll Save Your Tooth
A root canal is performed when a tooth is severely infected, and generally at this stage, the only alternative is extraction. If you want to save your tooth, a root canal is the way to go.

You'll Feel Better
When living with the decay and infection in the affected tooth, you've likely felt pretty miserable. This tooth was probably pretty painful, but a root canal can change all of that. By removing the source of infection, cleaning out the tooth, and sealing it, you will feel better quite quickly.

You'll Eliminate the Need for Restorations

If you have an extraction instead of a root canal, the only way to restore the original function and appearance of your mouth is to get a restoration. You could choose a bridge or to have an implant put in, and these procedures can take a while to complete.

With a root canal, you eliminate the need for these restorations, as you will save your original tooth. Ultimately, a root canal will be cheaper in the long run, as you won't need to invest in bridges, dentures, or implants.

Your Teeth Will Be Straighter

If you have a tooth extracted rather than going through with the root canal, the rest of your teeth could begin to shift now that there is an empty space in your mouth. This could cause misalignment and bite problems, but a root canal will prevent these issues.
