Dangers to Your Oral Health When You Don't Get Enough Sleep

Posted on 2/25/2017 by Mark Bieber
A man snoring loudly, because he's suffering from sleep apnea. When you do not get enough sleep, your entire body is affected. You can put on weight, look older than you really are, wrinkle prematurely, and even get more problems with your mouth.

Instead of letting sleep deprivation take its toll on your health, make sure you are getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep at night with as few interruptions as possible. Here are a few things to know if you don't get enough sleep.

How a Lack of Sleep Affects Your Mouth

First of all, when you do not get enough sleep, your mouth begins to droop. It makes you look older, and gives you a depressed appearance. This can affect your self-esteem, plus it can make others leery of interacting with you.

Next, when you doze off is when you are most likely to grind your teeth while sleeping. You don't get to the point of jaw relaxation until your body hits REM sleep. If you are sleep deprived and your body rarely enters REM, then you are likely causing damage to your teeth that you may not even be aware you are doing.

Finally, when you don't get enough sleep, your stress goes up. This can increase bruxism, cause your body to produce more acids, which can hurt your teeth, and it can make it to where your body struggles more to reset itself and heal when you should be sleeping.

If you are having trouble sleeping, contact our office. Tell them what is going on, and see what they suggest. They are likely going to want to take a look at your teeth first, then work out some type of treatment for you to protect your teeth until this phase of sleeplessness is able to pass.
