Ringing in your ears is a very annoying symptom. It can also cause hearing loss if the cause goes untreated. Many things can cause ringing in the ears, or tinnitus. Typically, it is caused by problems related to the ear like wax build up or trauma. There are many different kinds of tinnitus and the type of tinnitus can sometimes lead to the cause of the ear ringing.

Tinnitus can sound like a high-pitched whistle or it can sound like a hissing sound. It can be constant or intermittent. It can sound like a roaring, a buzzing or a chirping. You can imagine how annoying this can be when you are trying to listen to what someone is saying to you and above their voice all you hear is a chirping sound. So, what do your teeth have to do with an ear problem?

What Do Your Teeth Have to Do with Tinnitus?

There are a couple of reasons that your teeth may be causing the unwelcome sounds in your ear. One of the unwelcome sounds is a clicking noise. A clicking sound generally means there is a mechanical problem in or near your ear.

One of the most common mechanical problems is Temporal Mandibular Joint Syndrome or TMJ. The Temporal Mandibular Joint is located at the back of your jaw, on both sides, and is the joint that joins the jaw to the skull. When it acts up it can be caused by injury, clenching or grinding your teeth, arthritis or genetics. Fortunately, TMJ is easily treatable, but you have to find out you have it first. Your dentist can help with that.

Other dental causes of tinnitus are wisdom teeth. Yes, those pesky wisdom teeth can cause your ears to ring if they are impacted or infected. Also, teeth that have abscesses can also cause your ears to ring. If you have a problem mention it to your dentist to see if a dental problem is the cause.
