Aspirin Should Never Sit Directly on Any Oral Tissues - Here is Why

Aspirin Should Never Sit Directly on Any Oral Tissues – Here is WhyThere is an old wives' tale floating around that if your tooth hurts, you should put aspirin directly on it and the surrounding gum tissue. While it is difficult to say exactly where this myth originated, it is one that should be avoided. You could do more damage to your mouth if you place aspirin directly onto oral tissues.

Aspirin Can Burn Your Gums

Aspirin is highly acidic, which is the main reason why you shouldn't place it directly onto your gums. This will cause acid burns that appear as a large area of white-colored gums where the acid has damaged the tissue. It won't do much to relieve the actual toothache pain, and it can actually cause more discomfort by burning the gums.

What You Should Do Instead
If you are experiencing a toothache, feel free to take over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol or Motrin, but swallow the pills rather than placing them on the affected tooth. This can help you to stay comfortable until you get into our office, which you should always do. Even if the medication temporarily relieves your discomfort, it won't treat the underlying problem.

There are other things that you can do to relieve toothache pain before you see us. Place a cold compress on your face near the area of the sore tooth. Rinsing your mouth with salt water can also help, as salt water can draw fluid of tissues in order to reduce pressure.

Some people also use cloves or clove oil when they experience a toothache. Eugenol is the active ingredient that can provide relief, as it has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties to alleviate pain. If you have clove oil, apply a few drops to a cloth and then dab it onto the sore tooth.
