How to Care For Your Mouth When You Lose a Filling or a Crown
Posted on 2/10/2019 by Mark Bieber
The sudden loss of a filling or crown can be a startling experience, especially if it is the result of trauma or an accident. However, most cases aren't necessarily a dental emergency, and the problem is simple to fix. Simply give our office a call to set up an appointment, and in the meantime, follow some helpful pointers. Avoid Chewing on the Affected SideIf your crown or filling has fallen off, try your best to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Excess pressure can further exacerbate the problem and may damage the tooth. Chewing on the alternate side will be more comfortable, and it can also prevent food debris and bacteria from entering into the hole. Rinse Out Your MouthIf you can't get into our office right away, you may eat a few meals before your appointment. That's okay, as long as you are caring for your mouth after eating. The best way to do this is to gently gargle with warm salt water after you eat. This will help to keep the area clean and bacteria levels under control. Brush Your TeethIt is easy to see why you might be afraid to brush your teeth after a crown or filling falls out. However, good dental hygiene is important while your tooth is in this vulnerable state. The hole that was once occupied by a filling or crown is a great place for bacteria and food to build up, which could lead to a lot more damage. So, brush your teeth gently to keep them clean until you are able to get into your dental appointment. If you lose a filling or a crown, don't panic! Give our office a call. We are standing by and ready to help with any of your emergency dental needs.... Read more...
