Reasons for Painful Swallowing

Knowledge of the usual causes is essential to seek the proper treatment. Some common causes of painful swallowing, both dental and other, include:

Infection

Painful or difficult swallowing is generally present with swollen lymph nodes. Bacterial and viral infections commonly affect the throat, such as strep throat, colds, seasonal flu, or mononucleosis. They all have something in common: they cause pain each time you swallow. Fungal infections may similarly be present with painful swallowing, especially in patients with severe immune disorders. Another cause can be after wisdom tooth removal or other more invasive dental procedures.

Esophagitis

Esophagitis is caused by inflammatory changes in the esophagus resulting from acid reflux, infections, drugs, or allergens. The primary cause is the irritation created by the flowing back of the acid, which brings irritation into the process. This sets in pain or burning, especially during swallowing. If acid is the cause, this can also damage your teeth and needs to be gotten under control.

Throat Injuries

If the pharynx or the esophagus is traumatized, this could result in pain while swallowing. Such traumatization may occur from large, hard, or sharp foods or following accidental swallowing a foreign object. Some medical and dental procedures may also lead to temporary pain in the throat.

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils that results in painful swallowing. Most cases are caused by bacterial or viral infections; there may sometimes be a fever, swollen glands, and difficulty swallowing.

Neurological Conditions

In conditions like stroke or Parkinsons disease, the nerves related to the swallowing muscles get affected, thereby causing pain and discomfort. Causes of painful swallowing may span from infections to more severe causes like neurological conditions. As such, one should be keen to look out for symptoms and seek medical advice if pain continues. Proper oral hygiene, being well-hydrated, and avoiding irritants such as tobacco will prevent some causes of painful swallowing.

Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider or dentist will help detect and manage underlying problems early. Do not neglect the persistent pain while swallowing; make an appointment immediately with our dentist for a complete evaluation and proper treatment. Set wellness as a priority.
