Delicious by themselves or mixed in your favorite baked goods, raisins are a natural treat that have been around since 1500 BC. But are they healthy, and are there benefits to eating them, particularly in regards to your oral health? Are raisins worth the risk to your teeth?California ReasonsThere are many positive aspects when you include raisins in your diet. They contain prebiotics known as fructans, which are great for stimulating the microflora in your gut and reducing the risks of colon cancer. They also contain boron, which is good for teeth and bone development, and helps maintain your joints.Furthermore, they are loaded down with antioxidants which are particularly good at maintaining eyesight, and recent research from the American Society for Microbiology indicates that raisins can even naturally fight against oral bacteria, particularly those associated with gum disease, periodontal disease, cavities, and caries. The natural oleanolic acid in raisins can even prevent bacteria from sticking to your teeth and forming plaque. "Raisins" to be ConcernedHowever, while there are benefits to eating raisins, you should be advised of the risks. In particular, they do contain high concentrations of sugar, which can counter the helpfulness if not rinsed out of your mouth, by providing a habitat for bacteria to thrive. They're also sticky, which again means that you should rinse your mouth out after eating them, to avoid buildup on your teeth.Lastly, they can prove a risk to your teeth due to their chewy nature, as teeth are designed to grind and tear, and having them stick to your teeth and require extra maceration can damage and wear down your teeth over time. In short, raisins are wonderful for your entire body, including your mouth, but in moderation and with consideration to your dental health. Practicing proper oral hygiene can reduce the known risks, making these dehydrated fruits a must-have addition to your diet.
