Does Desensitizing Toothpaste Really Help with Tooth Sensitivity?

Posted on 1/20/2019 by Mark Bieber
Does Desensitizing Toothpaste Really Help with Tooth Sensitivity? If you suffer from uncomfortable tooth sensitivity, you may be desperate for relief. What you might not understand is whether or not desensitizing toothpaste really works. The good news is that it does, and it can lead to some major improvements with your sensitivity to pain.

Why Are Your Teeth Sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the inner parts of the teeth are exposed. The dentin lies under the enamel, and this portion of the tooth contains tiny channels that run toward the nerves. Once the dentin is exposed, cold drinks, hot foods, and other triggers can stimulate the nerves inside of the tooth.

How Does Desensitizing Toothpaste Work?

The active ingredients in a desensitizing toothpaste work to protect your teeth from hot food and cold drinks. Each active ingredient will achieve this a little bit differently:

•  Potassium nitrate. This ingredient works to soothe the nerves in your tooth, it is the most effective ingredient in treating sensitivity. The compound penetrates in through the enamel to reach the nerves, and then, it blocks signals sent to the brain that trigger discomfort.
•  Strontium chloride. This ingredient works by blocking dentin tubules, which are tiny holes that reach into the dental pulp. Strontium chloride covers the holes, returning the tubules to their naturally covered state.
•  Fluoride. While fluoride won't help with any pain, it is an important ingredient in desensitizing toothpaste. It strengthens the enamel, keeping potentially damaging foods from reaching the nerves.

To get the most from desensitizing toothpaste, you should use it twice per day. It may take a few applications before you notice any difference, but remain diligent. With time, you'll notice your discomfort subside.
