|If you are used to looking at people's tongues- and we are- you already know that not all tongues are made equal. In fact, if you have been in our business long enough, you will have seen a lot of stuff on people's tongues that you wouldn't think was normal.
You may have noticed when you stick out your tongue in the mirror that you have cracks in your tongue. If you have cracks on the surface of the tongue, you are a rarity. Something special. You have what is called a fissured tongue. But what causes it? There are several causes for your tongue cracks. Keep reading for more information.
Fissured TonguesFirst, you should know that a fissured tongue is not cancerous. Fissured tongues are easy to spot, because there are cracks on the surface of your tongue. The cracks can be shallow or deep.
No one knows for sure why people get fissured tongues. There are several factors that might be the reason you have a fissured tongue. There are genetic conditions, such as Down Syndrome or Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome that cause tongue fissures. If you have psoriasis, you may also have a fissured tongue.
The most common cause of a fissured tongue is a condition called geographic tongue. Geographic tongue is an inflammation of the surface of the tongue. While most people have bumps on their tongues that cover all of the surface of the tongue, in some people the bumps are missing. The lack of bumps on a tongue causes the tongue to appear patchy. Cracks can also develop on the tongue. Many researchers think that the tongue patches are more common in people with allergies and asthma.
If you have a fissured tongue, the most important thing for you to remember is that it is harmless. The best thing you can do for your tongue is to gently brush is to make sure that food particles don't get stuck in the cracks.
