What to Do Following a Tooth Extraction?

Posted on 4/26/2021 by Mark Bieber
What to Do Following a Tooth Extraction? If you've had a tooth (or several teeth) extracted, try to take an entire day to rest. Exercise as little as possible and make sure you keep your head up to avoid bleeding.

What Precautions Can I Take?

Avoid drinking hot drinks or eating hot foods till the anesthesia wears off. This is crucial because since you can't feel pain, you may unknowingly burn or scald your gums. Also, make sure you don't chew on your cheek while eating.

While resting, we recommend using an extra pillow to minimize the bleeding. Alternatively, you can also place a towel or an old pillowcase under your head.

Should I Rinse My Mouth?

You may be tempted to, but try to avoid doing so for the first 24-hours. You see, rinsing your mouth may encourage bleeding and, therefore, may delay the healing process. Similarly, you should be mindful of not touching the blood clot with your tongue or while eating. Doing so, may slow down healing or worse, may trigger an infection.

What Should I Avoid

For the first 24-hours, avoid drinking alcohol because doing so may encourage bleeding. In addition, it is important for you to brush your teeth but avoid brushing over the extraction site. Instead, carefully brush over the rest of your teeth and avoid vigorously rinsing out your mouth.

Why Am I Still In Pain?

Oftentimes, the open wound may trigger an infection, which is more painful than the tooth extraction itself. This infection is caused when your tooth's exposed socket had no blood clot, which is why dentists refer to it as 'dry socket'.
