At Toomin & Bieber Aesthetic Comprehensive Dentistry we specialize in several tooth replacement solutions, including dentures and partials.

Complete Dentures

A complete denture is a removable appliance used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Most complete dentures consist of prosthetic teeth set in a flesh-colored acrylic base. The base fits over the gum tissue and usually requires some form of adhesive to stay in place. Once all of your teeth are removed, your gum tissue will shrink or change shape during the healing period following your extractions.

For this reason, we must wait for 10 to 12 weeks before we fabricate your conventional denture using an impression. In the meantime, we may suggest an immediate denture, which is fabricated the same day as your extractions. However, it is important to note that immediate dentures are almost always considered a temporary solution.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a removable appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth in a single arch. Most partials have metal attachments or claps that secure the appliance to the surrounding teeth. These metal clasps can sometimes be seen in the visible portion of a smile. For this reason, there are also “precision attachments” that are much more aesthetically pleasing. Partial dentures for teeth in the anterior (front) region of the mouth may also resemble a retainer-like appliance. These partials are known as “flippers.”

Life With Dentures and Partials

In the beginning, your complete or partial denture may feel bulky or awkward. This is completely normal. Everyday tasks, such as eating and speaking, may take some practice before you become accustomed to wearing your new appliance. Inserting and removing your appliance may also take some practice.

Before you leave our office, Lawrence Toomin, DDS will give you a set of instructions to make your adjustment period much more smooth. If you receive a partial, you will be asked to wear it all of the time at first. While this may cause some initial discomfort, it will help us identify any areas that need adjustment.

Once you adjust to your appliance, eating should become a more pleasant experience. We recommend soft foods at first to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your gum tissues while you heal. Too much pressure on a particular area can create sore spots. Chewing on both sides of the jaw can even out the pressure to prevent this problem.

Caring for Your Denture or Partial

Caring for your new denture is easy and straightforward. We may recommend a denture cleanser. Regular toothpaste is typically too harsh for prosthetic materials. Some people choose to use hand soap or a mild dishwashing liquid. Be sure to brush your denture each day to eliminate plaque, bacteria, and food debris. It is best to use a brush specifically designed for dentures if you want the most effective results. You should also clean off your gum tissue while your denture is out to avoid potential problems. Over time, your denture may need to be relined or readjusted. Be sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible if your denture becomes loose or damaged.
