Periodontal (Gum) Disease Prevention


There is no great secret to preventing gum disease. The best way to avoid gum disease is a good oral hygiene routine that begins early in life and is practiced consistently. As simple as it sounds, its best to stick to brushing your teeth at least twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed, or better yet after each meal. You should floss at least once a day, and preferably before brushing so that you can clear away all the food particles that have been loosened. You should also visit our Burbank, CA office for a professional cleaning and check-up every six months or so, depending on your oral health.

Diagnose Gum Disease Early


Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum or “periodontal” disease. Because gingivitis can be so mild, patients often don’t register the first symptoms. Often it will be one of us at Toomin & Bieber Aesthetic Comprehensive Dentistry who will notice gum disease first.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, we encourage you to schedule a check-up, as these may be signs of gum disease:
•  Swollen or soft gums
•  Receding gums
•  Tender gums
•  Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss
•  Dusky red gums
•  Chronic bad breath



Maintain Good Oral Hygiene


Brushing


Most of us have been taught to brush our teeth twice daily, but you may be surprised to learn that many people aren’t brushing properly.
•  It should take at least two minutes to brush your teeth.
•  You should take care to brush each surface of the tooth, as well as your tongue.
•  It's best to brush after each meal.

During your next routine dental visit, you can always ask one of our friendly staff to give you a demonstration of the best tooth brushing techniques.

Flossing


Many adults are also not as vigilant about flossing once a day as they know they should be.
•  Keep your floss in a place where you can see it, it only takes a couple minutes.
•  Hold the floss between your thumbs and forefingers of both hands. Once you wrap the floss around your index fingers, you can grab it with your index fingers and thumbs.
•  Gently slide the floss between your teeth.

Like brushing, you can always ask us to demonstrate proper flossing technique.

Schedule Regular Dentist Appointments


Taking great care of your teeth and preventing gum disease also requires visiting the dentist every six months for a regular checkup and professional cleaning.
•  Even if you take stellar care of your teeth, a professional cleaning with special instruments will be able to clean in way that can't be done at home.
•  A full dental exam and x-rays will also help us identify and treat problems before they become too severe.
•  We will get along and below the gum line and remove built-up plaque and tartar.
